KUMIKO IIJIMA
Stylist + Costume Designer
Born in Tokyo. After graduating from the Apparel Technology Department at Bunka Fashion College and gaining experience as an assistant at VOGUE NIPPON, she became independent in 2000.
With a focus on styling and costume design, she works across genres including music visuals, advertising, film, and theater.
She has designed costumes for numerous international stages, including the Milan Expo “FUTURE RESTAURANT,” the Rio Olympics and Paralympics Closing Ceremonies (costume direction), and the Tokyo Olympics Closing Ceremony (Aoi Yamada’s costume).
Her styling is characterized by a vibrant energy that fuses pop-inspired playfulness with high-level fashion sensibility.
By freely mixing traditional garments, street culture, and fantastical worldviews, she weaves unique visual narratives.
Her bold reinterpretation of kimono and other Japanese motifs—reimagined through a contemporary, global lens—is highly acclaimed both in Japan and internationally.
In recent years, she launched “LatiJapo,” a project that explores cross-cultural expression between Latin America and Japan.
Based in Mexico City, she continues to act as a bridge connecting creative communities across borders.
